Five:AM has become the first yoghurt brand in Australia to convert from plastic tubs to a paper-based alternative, helping reduce virgin plastic use by the dairy industry.

The new tubs and lids contain 90 per cent sourced paperboard, with a thin plastic lining to help maintain product quality. This change intends to eliminate over 100 tonnes of virgin plastic from Five:AM’s packaging annually.

Developing paper-based packaging for a liquid product required extensive research to ensure freshness and quality.

Chris Elliott, CEO of Five:AM, said the switch sees the company leading a movement to reduce plastic use.

“Our all-natural organic products were already recognised as some of the best on the shelf at the recent DIAA Australian Dairy Product Competition, and now, with our new and more sustainable packaging, we’re raising the bar even higher. We identified this gap in the market and we are setting a new benchmark,” Elliott said.

The brand has achieved double-digit sales growth over the past six months, prompting major Australian supermarkets, including Coles and Woolworths, to double their distribution of the brand’s products.
