The sustainable packaging maker Biopak has launched bioboard sushi trays, providing a compostable alternative to traditional plastic sushi packaging for Japanese restaurants and sushi retailers.

This initiative aims to increase sustainable packaging options in the food service sector across Australia and New Zealand.

The Bioboard sushi trays are available in five sizes: Extra small, small, medium, large, and long.

These trays use premium paper and feature an aqueous coating, designed to be sturdier than many traditional plastic options.

Developed through collaboration with an Australian sushi retailer, the trays are now available to all sushi businesses in Australia and New Zealand.

Trevor Rumble, product and innovations director of Biopak, noted that traditional black plastic sushi trays are often not recyclable.

“Our new BioBoard trays are a sustainable, high-quality alternative – a true win-win,” Rumble added.

“Our collaboration with a leading sushi retailer allowed us to create a product that performs exceptionally well. We tested a variety of materials, and paper lined with an aqueous coating delivered the best results. Thanks to the coating, the sushi looks great on the tray and doesn’t stick to it. Plus, because the trays are paper-based, they are easy to custom-print, which was a key requirement for the sector.”

In addition, the chosen paper with an aqueous coating ensures sushi presentation and prevents sticking, while allowing for custom branding.
