Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One has unveiled plans to integrate sustainable carbon fibre materials into its 2025 W16 race car, advancing its target to reach net-zero emissions across all scopes by 2040.

Roughly 75 per cent of the new alternative materials are carbon fibre composites, comprising 60 per cent fibre and 40 per cent resin. The parts will undergo laboratory testing to ensure they meet the performance and durability standards required for high-level motorsport.

Mercedes expects the greener components to match the technical performance of conventional materials currently used in Formula 1.

“Collectively, we are moving the dial on sustainable products and demonstrating that Formula 1 continues to be the fastest laboratory in the world,” said Toto Wolff, CEO of Mercedes Formula 1.

“I would like to thank our partners for supporting our drive for material innovation and the FIA for enabling us to test these materials,” Wolff said.
