Reducing industrial carbon footprints just got a whole lot easier.
International researchers have discovered a way to transform dirty factory exhaust directly into useful fuel without needing to clean or filter the gas first.
Industrial smoke contains a mix of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. Normally, separating carbon dioxide for reuse requires a tremendous amount of energy and expensive equipment.
To tackle this environmental challenge, researchers from Adelaide University and the Université de Montpellier developed a specialised liquid mixture that allows them to skip the cleaning step entirely.
By preventing unwanted chemical reactions, the system smoothly converts raw factory emissions into carbon monoxide, a valuable building block used to make sustainable fuels and chemicals.
To make the process even greener, the team paired the system with solar panels, powering the transformation using clean solar energy.
The technology could help heavy industries like steel, cement, and chemical manufacturing move toward a cleaner, circular future.
“Our work shows it is possible to use CO2 directly from industrial exhaust streams without extensive purification, making carbon utilisation much more practical and potentially more economical,” said professor Yan Jiao, dean of chemical engineering at Adelaide University.
“This could help heavy industries such as steel, alumina refining, cement, chemicals, and energy production move toward cleaner and more circular production,” said Jiao.
Dr Damien Voiry from the Université de Montpellier added that finding new ways to handle emissions is crucial for the planet’s future.
“We found that controlling hydrogen-bond interactions is the key to suppressing unwanted reactions and enabling highly selective carbon dioxide conversion,” said Voiry.
“This opens a new direction for carbon utilisation technologies and could help accelerate the transition towards sustainable fuel and chemical production powered by renewable energy.”
