Australian leakproof underwear and swimwear brand Modibodi has achieved a major milestone in sustainable fashion with the launch of its biodegradable leakproof underwear range, a world-first.

The biodegradable underwear proved to have 97 per cent of its components break down into nontoxic substances at their end-of-life, with most materials decomposing within six months when buried in the soil. In addition, they are Standard100 by Oeko-Tex certified, free from harmful chemicals.

“After years of blood, sweat and science, we couldn’t be prouder to pioneer the world’s first biodegradable period and pee proof brief,” shares Kristy Chong, founder and CEO, Modibodi. “This is a product that not only reduces waste but doesn’t impact our planet when it reaches its end-of-life use.”

According to the company, the range took over two years of lab testing and development using a combination of natural and bioengineered synthetic textiles.

Chong explains that the key hurdle to an underwear’s biodegradability is the elastane used in the fabric to provide stretch, and elastane fibres, unfortunately, are non-biodegradable. To solve this problem, the company used crimp fibre and a super-fine rib-knit construction to maintain elasticity without the use of elastane.

The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) tested the biodegradable briefs, and after nine weeks of soil burial, the natural fibres have shown degradation, with holes created on the outer part of the garment from microorganisms present in the soul. In addition, the TPU waterproof film has also shown a loss of weight and strength.

“A longer period of burial would indicate the continued trajectory,” explains RMIT

The biodegradable briefs have also been tested to perform even after 100 washes and offer the same absorbency and quality as the regular Modibodi range.

“At Modibodi, we believe in responsible innovation, and we will continue to invest in sustainable solutions to support and protect every person through all life’s leaks,” concludes Kristy.

Available in a full brief and bikini style, Modibodi’s Biodegradable Brief range is available in sizes 8-20 from $42.50.
