Watsons has expanded its sustainability efforts by installing solar panels at 95 stores and all distribution centres across Luzon and Visayas in the Philippines, aiming to reduce its environmental impact and lower energy costs.
Since the installation of solar panels, Watsons has reduced its carbon emissions by 338.32 tons, saved 135.74 tons of standard coal, and offset the equivalent of planting 188 trees as of December last year.
The shift supports global climate efforts and lowers the company’s overall carbon footprint.
Watsons also introduced its first “Greener Store” in San Pedro, Laguna, which operates entirely on solar energy and serves as a model for creating more sustainable retail spaces.
The company has implemented other eco-friendly measures across its stores as well. All locations now use LED lighting, which is free of toxic materials, fully recyclable, and reduces energy use by up to one-third. Inverter air conditioners and refrigerators have also been installed, consuming 40% less energy than traditional units.
Sharon Decapia, senior assistant vice president of Watsons, said the initiative reflects the company’s long-term sustainability goals.
“With 95 stores and all distribution centres now powered by solar energy, we’re not only reducing our environmental footprint but also setting a benchmark for sustainable retail practices,” she said.
“This is just the beginning, and we’re excited to expand these efforts for a greener future.”
Watsons aim to convert an additional 30 stores and one more distribution centre to solar energy this year.
