Australian tour operator Freedom Fast Cats is taking further steps to reduce its environmental footprint by phasing out single-use plastics across its operations.

The Keppel Bay Islands-based business will now provide reusable cutlery, crockery, and glassware on board its vessels, while encouraging guests to bring refillable bottles, supported by water stations on board.

Non-profit organisation Plastic Free CQ commended the initiative, describing it as “helping to safeguard Keppel Bay Islands and the broader Southern Great Barrier Reef for future generations while inspiring visitors to make sustainable choices in their own lives.”

Melanie Allen of Freedom Fast Cats said the company aims to minimise waste and reduce the risk of plastics entering the Great Barrier Reef.

“This is our backyard – we’ve grown up here, raised our families here, and built our business here,” said Allen. “Protecting this place is personal. Going plastic-free on our tours is one way we can care for the environment while maintaining the quality of experience our guests expect.”
