Wine brand Scout & Cellar, a division of Full Glass Wine Co, has introduced two new California wines packaged in paper bottles, as part of an industry shift toward low-carbon packaging alternatives.
The new line, Petalscape, includes a 2025 Sauvignon Blanc and a non-vintage Red Blend.
Both offerings are packaged in the “Frugal Bottle,” a format manufactured from 94 per cent recycled paperboard with a food-grade inner pouch.
The paper container weighs roughly one-fifth as much as a standard glass bottle and produces up to 84 per cent fewer carbon emissions throughout its lifecycle.
It also requires approximately 80 per cent less energy and water to produce than glass counterparts.
The bottles are manufactured and filled in King City, California, by Monterey Wine Company using assembly machinery supplied by the British sustainable packaging firm Frugalpac.
While alternative packaging has traditionally faced resistance in the wine sector, lighter-weight formats have gained traction among US retailers seeking to lower supply chain emissions and shipping weights.
Major chains, including Target, Whole Foods, Total Wine & More, and 7-Eleven, have expanded their inventory of wines packaged in paperboard, aluminium, and alternative materials in recent years.
“Producers are realising that sustainability in the vineyard must carry through to the packaging on the shelf,” said Shannon Valladarez, GM at Monterey Wine Company.
In addition to lower transit emissions, paper packaging offers practical advantages for outdoor locations such as parks, pools, and boats where glass containers are frequently restricted or prohibited.
Both Petalscape releases are available through Scout & Cellar’s website, retailing at $23 per bottle.
