Uber is partnering with EV maker Lucid Motors to deploy more electric vehicles in its fleet to address the environmental impact of its ride-hailing services.

Uber is partnering with tech companies Nuro and Lucid to develop an exclusive global robotaxi program for the Uber ride-hailing platform next year. This is part of the company’s scaling plan for a more sustainable self-driving vehicle service.

“This investment from Uber further validates Lucid’s fully redundant zonal architecture and highly capable platform as ideal for autonomous vehicles, and our industry-leading range and spacious, well-appointed interiors as ideal for ridesharing,” said Marc Winterhoff, interim CEO of Lucid.

While Lucid deploys features that extend its cars’ range between charges, Nuro’s self-driving system combines automotive-grade hardware and AI-powered self-driving software designed for reliability with cost-efficiency.

With the longer 450-mile EPA-estimated range of the Lucid, the new Ubers will need less frequent downtime for charging, minimising costs and optimising vehicle availability.

Uber plans to deploy 20,000 Lucid vehicles equipped with the Nuro Driver across major US cities next year and globally over the next six years.

In addition, some companies are now ramping up on greener vehicle-related options in their businesses.
