The sustainable fashion design contest Redress Design Award has named Federico Badini Confalonieri from Italy as the winner of the 2022 round.

According to Redress, Confalonieri impressed the judges with his collection, Micro – Rain, which draws attention to the problem of microplastics in the fashion industry. His designs use zero-waste techniques to upcycle waste fabrics from his previous collections and use synthetic clothing with an integrated filter fabric to trap pollution during washing.

“This prize is about more than winning a competition,” said Confalonieri .  It will give me even more energy and determination to work towards building together a more sustainable fashion industry.”

With the Redress Design Award 2022 honour comes the opportunity to work with international outdoor wear brand Timberland on a sustainable range.

“To partner with one of the world’s most iconic brands, Timberland, is a huge opportunity for me, and I look forward to creating a positive and powerful project together,” he said.

At Timberland, Confalonieri will work alongside the brand’s design team to learn about the supply chain of its parent VF Corporation – from product development to sourcing – as well as gain a deep insight into the sustainable fashion industry.

Timberland is active in the sustainability space, recently launching the Timberloop take-back program in which owners can receive a discount on new products by returning worn-out apparel.

The Redress Design Award is one of the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competitions. It was established in 2011 with the goal of educating upcoming fashion designers worldwide about sustainable design theories and techniques and accelerating the transition to circular fashion.

Awards founder Christina Dean believes that educating the community about sustainable design is critical. She also encourages more businesses to adopt the purpose-driven motto and, more importantly, to persevere even when times are tough.
