Major Australian supermarket chain Woolworths has revealed its broadest range of plant-based and gluten free Christmas food treats yet, spearheaded by a Plant Based Christmas Roast dinner.

The grocer says demand for meat-free dishes has soared 32 per cent this year as Aussie consumers adopt vegetarian or flexitarian lifestyles.

The new roast, which will be sold through 800 supermarkets for AU$15 (US$11), is made from soy protein, infused with traditional Christmas herbs and spices for “a robust savoury flavour,” and served with a cranberry glaze.

Additional menu items include Vegan Cauliflower & Mushroom Wellingtons and a new vegan, Australian-made Gold Dark Chocolate & Davidson Plum Pudding made using plums sourced from the Northern Rivers region of NSW, along with Woolworths Plantitude Vegan Petite Meringue Nests 9pk.

“The ‘flexitarian’ diet is definitely one of this year’s growing food trends, and we continue to see many of our customers swapping traditional meat and dairy for plant-based and vegan alternatives a few times each week,” said Woolworths plant-based category manager, Mauro Pisani.
