South Korean petrochemical company Lotte says it has successfully produced eco-friendly products made with plastic bottles such as bags and running shoes at their Project Loop campaign.

Project Loop aims to minimise environmental damage and establish a virtuous circle of waste by improving collecting waste plastics and recycling.

The project has been hosted by Lotte Chemical and operated by Impact Square and began operations last March, together with SuperBin’s Nephron, an artificial intelligence (AI) robot designed for resource circulation, collected the plastic bottles.

Kumho Fiber Industries pulverised plastic waste to use as base materials for new products. At the same time, the Korea Textile Development Institute produced fabrics sent to a fashion producer, LAR, which created the bags and shoes.

Next year, local startups, including Beyond and Revelop, will join the initiative to produce a greater variety of apparel and bags.
