Restaurants in Seoul’s Gangnam district will be engaged in a trial program to use multi-use boxes for food delivery if consumers request.
The move is an initiative to encourage consumers to spurn single-use containers which usually end up in waste systems and is proving a growing challenge for restaurants, food-delivery services and even airlines.
Customers of some 60 restaurants in Gangnam will be able to order food in a multi-use package in a program established in partnership with the delivery app Yogiyo.
Selecting ‘multi-use box’ (1000 won, equivalent to US$0.85) upon ordering, consumers will receive food in a stainless steel box instead of a single-use plastic package.
Scanning a QR code printed on the multi-use container with a smartphone camera will take the consumers to a website where they can be returned.
Once the online registration is complete and the multi-use boxes are left on the doorstep, a professional cleaning company will pick them up, wash and sterilise them and take them back to the restaurant.
