As e-commerce scales up, the volume of plastic packaging sent to landfills is causing an undeniable threat to the environment.
Fulfilling online shopping orders typically requires packaging in various sizes, shapes, and durability levels, which facilitates the online shopping process. In response to this scenario, Mondi – a UK-headquartered global packaging and paper company – has collaborated with machine supplier Beck Packautomaten to create functional paper-based packaging that is durable and robust.
“All types of goods are being transported around the globe on a daily basis. The need to create bespoke packaging that reduces waste, protects the wide range of products and delivers on sustainability targets is enormous,” said Thomas Lunz, industry group manager of Mondi.
“Our functional barrier paper enables online retailers to continue reducing the use of unnecessary plastic following our approach of using paper where possible and plastic when useful.”
According to the company’s consumer trend research, online business owners are actively finding practical solutions while ensuring as optimal as possible protection of goods delivered, with 82 per cent of customers preferring recyclable packaging.
By measuring the packed goods and calculating the paper required for the packaging process, Beck’s automated packing machines can reduce excess material usage and save production costs. The recycled and paper-based packaging is also designed with four-sided stable sealing, which ensures safer transit and that the packaging meets shipping standards.
