Sustainable sneaker label Saye has launched a sneaker collection made from cactus, corn and bamboo leaves as part of its effort to become a zero-waste brand.

Dubbed “Modelo ‘89”, the vegan sneakers collection features alternative leather made from Nopal cactus leaves called Desserto developed by Adrian Lopez Velarde and Marte Cazarez from Mexico. The material is designed to offer cruelty-free, sustainable alternatives, without any toxic chemicals, phthalates and PVC.

While Nopal Cactus is used for the upper part, the lining and shoelaces are made from 100 per cent bamboo and organic cotton. Modelo ‘89 Vegan Cactus sneakers come with sustainable packaging made from recycled boxes and biodegradable bags.

Saye’s Modelo ‘89 Vegan Cactus sneakers are available online at RRP US$192.

For each pair of Saye’s sneakers sold, the brand funds the growth of two trees in collaboration with the NGO We Forest to fight against deforestation. Saye has planted 165,550 trees across Zambia, India, Australia and the Amazon. Its goal is to reach more than 200,000 trees by the end of this year.
