A container deposit scheme in NSW is showing how everyday recycling can support both environmental and social outcomes.
Recyclers have given their 10-cent container refunds to Guide Dogs NSW/ACT as part of a six-month campaign connected to the Return and Earn program.
The campaign raised more than $175,000, which was sufficient to pay for the breeding, upbringing, and training of three guide dogs.
People using Return and Earn machines and depots across NSW chose to donate their refunds. Each guide dog costs more than $50,000 to train, reflecting the lengthy process of preparing dogs to support people with low vision or blindness.
Dale Cleaver, CEO at Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, emphasised that the refund concept is inspiring. “This partnership has shown the incredible impact our community can have when we come together.”
“These funds will help us provide three expertly trained Guide Dogs, giving people with low vision or blindness greater confidence and independence. It’s proof that small acts can add up to life-changing outcomes.”
Since launching in 2017, Return and Earn has become a steady source of funding for charities and community groups, raising more than $82 million through donations and fees from hosting return points.
